Our judge, Peter von Halem, is an award winning competitor in the discipline of carriage driving with a long list of experience and a diverse background. Originally from a small, alpine village in the Principality of Liechtenstein, Peter’s first driving experience was at the age of 17 as he served an apprenticeship on a large farm in Holstein, Germany. Each pair of heavy draft horses at the farm had a designated driver, but Peter would fill in when the driver was not available. These horses were very experienced, easy for a beginner to handle and Peter was able to learn a lot working with them.

By the time Peter was 20, he had a “journeyman farmer” position in East Farnham, Quebec, where he worked with a pair of Percheron draft horses, learned English and gained further experience. Many years of hard work eventually led to a job, based in New York, as he pursued another old dream of working with airplanes at Trans World Airlines.

In 1982, Peter bought a former dairy farm in Bozrah, Connecticut and returned to his passion for horses, first with his daughter’s involvement in the 4-H horse program and later through a horse boarding business he started. This business expanded into what would become New England Carriage Imports LLC, where Peter was the owner / proprietor from 1998 until about 2020. Eventually, Peter bought a pair of Canadian Hackney Horse / Clydesdale cross mares and began to show them at both pleasure driving shows as well as combined driving shows, with one of his first shows being at the North Stonington Fair in 2002.

Peter has been an active member of the Connecticut Valley Driving Club for a number of years, serving as club president from Nov., 2013 to Nov., 2016. In this capacity, he coordinated CVDC’s first “Scurry” event in July, 2014 and first Driving Derby at Mitchell Farm in October, 2016. Peter has also been an active participant in the Eastern Connecticut Draft Horse Association and a member of the Carriage Association of America (CAA). Since 2002, Peter von Halem has been in attendance at the North Stonington Fair, making good friends along the way and now he is excited to come back as the judge for the 2022 Carriage Driving Horse Show.
